Hardship and High Living
A successful launch was held at Oscar Wilde House, Dublin, to celebrate the relaunch of this important work. The evening brought together readers, friends, family, and supporters for a warm and memorable gathering, featuring selected readings, a short address from the family, and the opportunity to purchase copies on the night.
Portobello Press was delighted to relaunch Hardship and High Living: Irish Women's Lives 1808–1923, a richly researched account of the women who lived through Ireland's 19th century.
The book was launched by the writer and poet, Nessa O'Mahony, with contributions from family members Fiona Ó Cléirigh and Conor Ó Cléirigh.
Hardship and High Living draws on unpublished diaries, letters, and contemporary records to present eleven portraits of Irish women — from the privileged drawing rooms of Dublin to the Poor Law Workhouses; from the Crimean War to the Aran Islands.
